Solo Travel

For work I took a short 3 day trip tp Chicago for a conference.  It has been incredibly hard to be away from the boy and my husband, but it was a good trip, although slightly interesting.

Monday I arrived, sad, lonely.  I didn't know anyone.  A good night to stay in the room, ordered pizza (ummm Gino's East Deep Dish with sausage...OMG), found an overpriced bottle of wine, watched TV (NO BRAVO!!!!) and skyped with the boy and husband before going to sleep.  I left the tv on for some noise, knowing full well I wouldn't be able to sleep alone in complete silence.  After I fell asleep I awoke to what sounded like a crazy loud car alarm and a mans voice telling me "There is a building emergency, leave immediately.  Take the stairs and not the elevator."  I jumped out of bed, turned on every light I could, grabbed my phone and realized my pj's were not going to cut it if this was a fire.  I could not find pants.  For my 3 day trip I believe I packed 6 pairs of pants.  At 1 in the morning after being awoken by a man yelling at me and realizing I was probably going to die I was in a complete and utter panic about pants.  Finally I found my pants from earlier, put them on, grabbed a sweater, my phone and purse and left.  I began the descent down 11 flights of stairs.  What earlier in the day I deemed was my good luck and a great view, I now was certain would be my death.  As I and everyone else walked down the stairs I realized my pockets were sticking out of my pants.  After numerous attempts to put them back in I realized my pants were on inside out.  WTF.  I was horrified.  My main fear changed from me dying in a fiery death to everyone seeing what size my pants were.  It was horrible.  As I reached the seond or so floor they announced we could go back up.  I now realized I needed to climb back up the 11 flights of stairs I had just come down.  At 1 in the morning, with inside out pants.  Awesome.  I climbed up and arrived at my room the exact same time the guy in the next room did.  We looked at each other and with great conviction he said "What the fuck.".  Well said sir, well said.

Now as I sit in the lobby using free wi-fi until it is time to go to the airport...$10 for WiFi O'Hare?  Really?..I have been privy to a very engaging and interesting exchange by what I can only call the D-bags sitting next to me.  There are 5 of them.  2 are smoking electronic cigarettes, one just proclaimed he is from "Naperville, the richest suburb in perhaps the US" one d-bag name dropped about someone he worked with (who was just fired as a CEO of a fortuen 500 company, but hey, he is still famous, right?).  Then they all spoke about some awesome new energy drink/pill/powder they were using to give them HUGE amounts of energy, which helps them in the bedroom apparently.  Then as they were leaving they were complaining about the "fake" Starbucks in the hotel.  How they use the wrong "shit" and the drinks take wrong.  Finally they left.  As I was typing I heard someone walking behind me being all d-baggy about the valet at the hotel.  Something about taking keys.  I began to wonder how many d-bags are there in Chicago, and are they all at this hotel.  When he walked back out, still talking about keys, I turned around.  Same rich d-bag from Naperville.

I have enjoyed this trip, I cannot wait to get home and see the boy and my husband, but I am glad I came.

Time Travel

Things have been busy...this is not an excuse blog, just a statement of fact.

For a couple of weeks I thought long and hard about my next blog post, "Brilliant" I thought to myself.  What a great post!  So many directions to take this idea.  I thought about them all, in the shower, in the car, at work, while on the phone...so many ideas all based on this one thought.  What?!?!?  (I hear you all screaming in suspense.)  I have no idea.

Honestly, I feel like it is on the tip of my brain, so close, yet so far.  If I could just remember the one word...and here it is...Howard Johnson.  Honestly, I just thought of it.  I also thought about erasing the rest of this post...but hell, it might be kind of funny, let's keep it.

One of the hotels my husband is planning on us staying in is a Howard Johnson, there might actually be a couple.  When he first told me about it, I was ecstatic.  I have NEVER stayed in a Howard Johnson, never.

I remember when I was in high school and my best friend Amanda was going on a band trip (how glam).  She went to the rich private school and I went to the public school (Go BENGALS!).  Her trip was to California and they were staying at a Howard Johnson.  I somewhat remember hearing of a Howard Johnson before this, but in that far off way.  All I knew was she was rich, she went to a rich school, I could only assume a Howard Johnson was a beautiful fancy hotel in sunny glamorous California.  I was so jealous.  As I got older, I kind of forgot about Howard Johnson hotels and all their mystique.  I have traveled, I wouldn't call me a traveler, but I have been on a few trips, out of the country a couple of times...I know my way around a hotel room.  I have definite hard limits on where I won't stay...Super 8....

So now I find myself oddly excited about these trips to the magical Howard Johnson hotels, they were on Mad Men...maybe they will be retro cool.

The discussions....

It started with a Groupon (don't all great things?).  A nice hotel in Carlsbad, California next to Legoland.  A nice hotel, with a pool and a bar next to the pool with Cabanas, sounded good to me.  And then a trip to Legoland for the boy.  Perfect.  The idea exploded.  Now it is a 9 day half cross country trip with 8 states, a whole crapload of national parks and treasures and a giant hole made in the ground from a meteor 100 years ago.
I love my husband, dearly.  And I have provided him with an idea that has provided him the opportunity to spend hours on the internet looking up maps, websites, information and planning.  He has spreadsheets, and timed maps and hotel ideas.  I think he likes this part as much as he will like the actual trip, one of the many reasons I love him.
Everyday, he comes in the house or looks up from the computer and I know what he is about to talk about.  A new road, a new hotel, a new amazing thing to do.  How awesome is that!  It's like having a vacation planner for free.  Every idea he comes up with keeps the boy and I at the front of his planning.  Much better than a vacation planner.  He knows exactly the type of things we love.  Come on, would an vacation planner find a 20 foot concrete prairie dog for your 8 year old to take a picture in front of?  No, but my husband did.  He knows that the boy will laugh for hours because of it.  When we get there, when we look at pictures, when he looks at it now in the interwebs.
I look forward to the information he shares with me everyday about what he finds.  It makes me wonder what other treasures he will find.  Maybe a giant cement hermit crab?
